The dazzling French Riviera is a special gem steeped in history, culture, and Provençal charm. This region speaks through its vivid artwork, renowned gastronomy, and the eccentric sights and sounds of “joie de vivre” that make this area such an attractive destination. From the diverse markets and the laid-back communities to the turquoise waters that give the Cote d’Azur its namesake, there is a draw to this region that leaves you amazed and fulfilled.
We kick off our time in Old Town Nice. Once a vital port to the Roman Empire, the city gained a reputation over time as a desirable destination due to its pleasant Mediterranean climate. In the 18th century, European aristocrats chose it as a winter escape and by the 19th century, the city would become home to the infamous French artist Henri Matisse, who helped to make this area an artist’s haven. We take an obligatory stroll along the famed Promenade des Anglais, which takes its name from the English expats who helped to establish this promenade in the late 1800s. A gorgeous avenue lined with bushy palm trees, the path follows the golden sands and tepid waters of Baie des Anges for 7 km. Off the path, we acquaint ourselves with street markets that exude a distinctly quaint French feel against a backdrop of colorful pastel buildings and as scents of fresh baguettes linger in the air.
Throughout the week we wind our way along the coast, through graceful villages and picturesque cities that further illustrate the relaxed vibes of Southern France. We delve into gastronomy, our palettes uncovering new tastes and exploring the diverse specialties and the creative talent that bring the food from this region to life. The streets of Cannes and the distinguished city of Monte Carlo – within the tiny sovereign country of Monaco – beam with luxury and chicness unlike anywhere else in the world. From traditional perfume workshops to the stunning views that once inspired German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, we take in all that the Cote d’Azur has to offer.
